Saint Patrick’s Day is here and there are many ways to celebrate. One of the classic ways is with whiskey. Since it’s Saint Patrick’s Day it wouldn’t be right unless of course it was Irish whiskey. With that in mind I just tasted Jameson for the first time in awhile and proceeded to make some cocktails with it. Since their history dates back all the way to 1780, it seemed like a classic choice.

Of the cocktails I tried making, my favorite was the Manhattan. It’s balanced array of flavors, really offers a lot to tempt the taste buds.

Jameson Manhattan

1.5 parts Jameson Irish Whiskey

1 part sweet vermouth

Dash orange bitters

Maraschino cherry for garnish

Pour ingredients into a cocktail shaker and shake over ice. Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with a cherry.

And while I don’t drink much straight Whiskey, I found the Jameson to be smooth enough that it went down easy, even for someone like me, who only drinks it from time to time. So if you’re going to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day, do it right with some Jameson. A Corned Beef Sandwich isn’t a bad idea either.

With Valentine’s Day coming up you’re going to want to find the right drink to tempt your date. This romantic holiday calls for something a bit different than the everyday cocktail. Sandeman, a well known Port House is recommending something they call a “Sweetheart Sparkler.” This drink combines sparkling wine and port. And while both elements come from the wine world, combining them, makes them a cocktail in my book.

Before getting into the drink itself, I’ll look at the elements I used to make this beverage.

The 2007 Fratelli Moscato d’Asti is 100% Moscato. Fruit comes from the Asti region in Piedmont. 600 cases of this wine were produced and the suggested retail price is $15.99.

This sparkling Moscato has intense aromas of fruit and honey. Throughout the palate honey, tropical fruit and an undercurrent of almond are present. There is a pleasant, inherent sweetness that glides along the tongue and coats the back of the tongue. Those sweet notes are perfectly balanced by enough acidity to keep this sparkler from every becoming cloying. On its own I would serve with appetizers such as goat cheese puffs or with a fruit tart for dessert.

The Sandeman Founder’s Reserve Port is made from select lots of wine. After fermentation is stopped by adding brandy this offering was aged for five years before it was released. The suggested retail price for this wine is $18.99.

This Port is a deep, dark ruby in color. The characteristics through the palate lean towards red fruit flavors. Red raspberry and bing cherry are prominent with vanilla and clove spice notes also playing an underlying role. The flavors are rich and sweet. This Port is impressively smooth. On its own I would pair this wine with either dark chocolate or strong cheeses.

While these wines are both lovely by themselves combining them to form a cocktail is what I recommend for something different this Valentine’s Day. The Sweetheart Sparkler is pretty straight forward:

1 part Port

3 parts Sparkling wine

I recommend poring the Port into a Champagne Flute first and topping it with the sparkling wine. The color becomes a lighter, brighter red. Closer to the red more closely associated with the holiday itself. The bright fruit flavors of the Moscato are balanced by the dark red fruit notes of the Port to form a flavor somewhere in the middle. With it’s balance of fruit flavors, acidity and sweetness this cocktail doesn’t need to be saved for dessert. It has diverse enough elements to drink with your Valentines’ Day meal. If you decide to do that, I’d suggest making up a pitcher of these right before you sit down to eat and enjoying it throughout the evening.

Head over to Gabe’s View for my Valentine’s Day Sparkling Wine Recommendations!

The first thing I’m looking at on this newly launched offshoot of Gabe’s View is Saké. Saké2me, a California based company imports junmai Saké from Japan and infuses it with natural flavors. Junmai Saké is a specific grade that utilizes only Saké rice and pure water. No additional alcohol is added.

The offerings from Saké2me are available in single serving (6.3 ounces) bottles. Each of them has a light sparkle and 7% alcohol. Prices vary but single bottles often sell for under $4 while 4 packs are available in the low to mid teens. There are currently four flavors available and I tasted each of them.

The Saké2me Yuzu has aromas of tangerine, clementine, lemon peel and a hint of candied orange. From the first sip onward the taste is very crisp and clean. This is a refreshing beverage. At the same time it’s mouthwatering and invites you back for more. The story here is the citrus which appears in abundance.

The Saké2me Asian Pear has strong aromas of candied pear. From the first sip and throughout orchard pear flavors with a touch of spice are the stars here. At some point a bit of creaminess comes out and adds an extra layer of richness that sets this one apart from the other 3 flavors for me.

The Saké2meGreen Tea is filled with tea aromatics, accompanied by a touch of mesquite honey. Dark tea flavors come out from the very first sip you take. Those tea flavors provide a drying quality in this flavor that sets it apart from the others. I also found the Green Tea flavor to be a bit mellower and milder.

The Saké2me Ginger Mango has aromatics that simply jump out of the glass. From the first sip the ginger spice really kicks in and plays an equal role with the Mango flavors. This one brings to mind summer and an island breeze. The Ginger Mango is the one I’d choose for beach or poolside sipping.

All four flavors from Saké2me have a clean crisp flavor profile as a commonality. Which flavor you choose is going to come down to your own personal taste buds. The Asian Pear impressed me the most and it’s the favor I could see myself drinking most often.

These will make for an interesting cocktail or a nice match for appetizers at a party. With most people’s New Years eve celebrations culminating with a sparkling wine toast, these four flavors of sparkling Saké would be a great way to get the party started. In addition to being flavorful and fun they’ll likely be a good conversation starter. Whenever or however you choose to drink them I highly recommend you do so in a champagne flute or standard wine glass as opposed to straight from the bottle or with a straw. Serving them in glassware allows the aromatics to come out.
